Ski areas stand to gain myriad and symbiotic benefits from forging partnerships with Tribal nations. Welcoming Native communities to the mountain to connect with their ancestral homelands can bring physical, mental and social health benefits to Tribes, serve as an important cultural exchange for guests, and, in some cases, lend historic wisdom to land stewardship in efforts such as fire prevention. These relationships could also serve to increase snowsports participation from Native communities — which, for the last 10 years has remained below 1%, the lowest of all populations tracked in NSAA’s Kottke End of Season and Demographic Report. This is a series of articles that explores the advantages of those burgeoning partnerships being formed at ski areas across the U.S.
